So I decided a while back to make a sump out of my 55g tank to go with my 75. I went for maximum water volume and made the baffles about 18 inches down to about 14 inches. The problem with that was that the sections were so deep that there was lousy circulation within the sections and I was getting a lot of cyano, so I re-built the sump with the highest point being 12 inches, and the flow is way better. I have a small section for macro to grow and it tumbles nicely, and you can see the flow is much more vigorous. So moral of the story is bigger is not always better.
