Anybody know anything about LED lighting? I'm thinking of getting rid of the heat of MH.

Talk to Mclandy or Flying Moray. I can tell you about some of it, because I have ran it for about 8 months, but not into the technical stuff. What would you like to know?

I am running the Aqua Ray 500s on my tank but it hasn't been up and running long enough for much coral growth. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about the aqua rays though.

I have a 58 gallon tank. What would it take to light it for SPS? I want to get away from all of the heat I'm generating. I'm controlling it, but if I could cut my electric bill, I think I could cover the cost of the LED's. I'm just wondering what brands people are using and how many strips/modules it would take to replace the MHs I'm currently running. I don't really know enough about them to ask smart questions I guess.

With the lights that I am using you will get usable par ratings down to 24 inches of water depth. The same company makes a model that will deliver usable par to 30 inches as well. I have sps, lps, and softies in my tank and everything is thriving. I'm running six of the aqua ray 500s on my 110gal and love them. For more info try www.americanaquariumproducts.com.

At this point I plan to contol with the controller that comes with them. From all the forums I have been reading, I plan to hang 10-12" off the water surface, set them on the automatic moon cycle with the blues at 30% and the white at 45%. Appearantly I will need to start even lower and work up to that. I ordered the new ones with the white:blue:royal blue and there are not a lot of first hand experiences out there to form a good decision off of. I guess I will be a pioneer of sorts and will keep all informed.

With all that said. I was looking to purchase the Apex controller and am waiting to hear back from the vendors on the compatibility with the AI. Does anyone have some insight on that? I am holding off on the purchase until I know more.

I think I heard AI will be compatible with the Apex in the near future but you should get enough control out of the AI control for now.

I did go with the sol blues after reading that others wanted more blue and the fact that the lights seem to be so bright and the fact that they can be controlled independantly. Just confirmed they are out for delivery on the UPS truck. What a welcoming way to end my stressful work week! Can't wait. I will post some pictures once I get them up and running.

Thanks for all of the help. I placed my order and it will be shipped in a couple of weeks. That will give me a bit more time to think about it and to read about LED lighting so I will know what to do when they come.

Shouldn't you do your homework before buying them?  Just kidding, Jim! [IMG]  I am sure they will be great.  I have read a lot about LEDs lately and AI are definitely one of the top LED fixtures out there.
