Ive been looking at lights for awhile and recently happen to see a unit in a store that looked interesting. I asked about it but was told it wasnt for sale and that they were no longer made. I came across another that was in for repair at another shop. I found one but was wondering if anyone had used one and their opinions on it. Its the fixture type with MH bulbs down the center and T5s down the sides and some have LED moon lights in the center. The one Im looking at is 72" for a 175 gallon, 3 - 150w MH bulbs and 4- 96w PC. How well would this work for the application?

I used these for years and loved them recently switched to LEDs. I happen to have this same size and setup for sale as well /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

We had one for years as well but switched to LEDs too. Great fixture - grew corals very well. Heat, cost of bulbs/power and the advancement of LEDs drove us to LEDs with our new tanks.

With the right bulbs I think its hard to beat the MH/T5 combo. Both in coral growth and coloration. But as mentioned heat, and bulb replacement cost are definitely something that need to be factored into the equation when considering lighting. I think pairing LEDs with t5s is another good option.

When I was looking at one of the units I asked about LEDS, shop "owner" said he didnt care for them, said you'd have to spend $3,000 to get good ones. I currently have 2 LED banks and 2 T5s in a custom made hood on a 73 gal and its not enough light. Going to switch out the dimmer LED and put in 2 more T5s. Any suggestions on what to use or look at for a 72x24x29 dim tank?
