I am curious as to what temp is to hot for a tank. I have my 12g I usually don't run a Geter just the pump and during the day it gets to around 75,76. I just put in a heater and it is now up to around 80 and rising. My readings come off of the stuck on thermometer on side of the tank

I would try and keep the temp around 78/79 degrees.

I hate these things but I don't have a actual thermometer. Here is what my thing says

Well the heater that I run stays on all the time doesn't shut off.

That sounds like that could be a potential catastrophic event waiting to happen. Probably should get another heater and if you can afford one get some type of control that will regulate the temp automatically. Another route you could take would be to use two under-sized heaters so in case one goes bad it would leave some margin of error.

Cool thanks. Ya I took my heater out, didn't want temp to keep rising.
